We've had a very busy June and July!
So, "what were you guys doing?" I hear you ask. Well, we commemorated Windrush75 in style to pay homage to the generation that worked hard to make our lives better than they were when they arrived.
So, here’s what we’ve been up to: -
Hosted by Sherril Donaldson, we delivered the Windrush75 Festival with various speakers, Trevor Hall, Kindy Sandhu, Junaid Hussain, Ebony Ademola, Holly Cooper, reflecting on the early days of moving to the UK, the horrors of the Windrush Scandal and the ongoing work to build a strong and resilient Black Community in Coventry and Warwickshire.
We delivered our Annual Windrush Dinner and Dance with more than 100 people in attendance.
We presented the Annual Windrush Awards for our generational ACT Community Champions and this year we added an Award for the Outstanding Community Group.
We attended the raising of the Windrush Flag at the Coventry Council House.
We attended the annual Windrush Remembrance service at Coventry Cathedral.
Delivered the second Family Funday of the year, and although the weather wasn’t ideal, we had a brilliant day of family sports, food, music and lots of laughs.
We started our 2023 programme of 'Laugh & Chat' sessions for our elders and wider community.
I'm sure you will agree, it's been busy. We now move on to the next 6 months of our scheduled activities.
We want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the Nominees and Winners of the 2023 ACT Champion Awards.
Congratulations to the winners: -
Windrush Generation – Bill Hall
1st Windrush Generation – Esmie Ferdinand
2nd Windrush Generation – Andre Russell
Organisation – Cariba Women’s Group
There was a special Award for our very own Sherril Donaldson as we recognised her contribution to the growth of our organisation and many others in the region.
Naturally we say a huge “THANKS” to our team of volunteers and supporters, because without them we would not be able to do anything!!
