WINDRUSH CELEBRATIONS
22nd of June is Windrush Day, a day of commemoration for those who travelled to Britain to support in the nation's post-war reconstruction. Many, if not all of us, are familiar with the reality for Commonwealth migrants who came to England in the 1940s, especially the Windrush Scandal.
So much of the dominant understandings of Windrush focus around London and big cities across the country. Coventry and Warwickshire became the home for many of these individuals, who built our community in the face of the trials and tribulations of the time. Here at ACT, we celebrate the entire diaspora, and every year since 2019, we have welcomed you to celebrate with us.
From 2019 to 2023, our annual Windrush Dinner & Dance brought you all entertainment, a 3-course meal, and live music. An overwhelmingly successful night, bringing the community together. In 2022, ACT decided to add an Awards presentation to the night. Anyone can nominate someone, who has contributed to our community in some way, for an ACT Windrush Award (which includes a trophy and certificate). This has made the night truly a special occasion.
On the 10th of June 2023, we hosted our first Windrush Festival, you read all about the day from our blog post. With workshops, panel discussions, music, and food, it was a wonderful commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Windrush. We had so much fun the first time, that we hosted our second Windrush Festival on the 26th June 2025!
These events are all self-funded by the Arawak Community Trust, and although we do charge for tickets, we still work at a loss. Any donations are appreciated and can be made below, and if you're interested in sponsoring any of our events, get in touch.
